Timaru's Grey Power president Denise Fitzgerald says her organisation is pleased with the referendum results, even though John Key has said asset sales will continue.

More than 1.3 million people voted, with 67.2 per cent opposed to the part-selloff of Air New Zealand, Mighty River Power, Genesis Power and Meridian Energy.

"We're pleased with the result and the turnout," Denise Fitzgerald said.

People had to have a chance to have their say. She hoped the Government's dismissal of the results would inform the public vote next election.
