Recipients of the Mackenzie District Council scholarship and the Bruce Scott Memorial prize have received their prizes.

The Bruce Scott Memorial prize was awarded to two 17-year old students, Toby Bell (Mackenzie College) and Joshua Nelson (Twizel Area School).

They received their prizes from Elizabeth Scott, widow of Bruce Scott, a former councillor, county chairman and inaugural mayor of Mackenzie District.

Mrs Scott described the pair as "very worthy recipients of the award".

Toby is heading for the University of Canterbury to study engineering, while Joshua will study at Lincoln for a Bachelor of Science degree.

The winner of the Mackenzie District Council award, Zoe Dobbs (17) of Craighead, received $2000, which will help towards funding her future aspirations at the University of Otago, where she will study for a Bachelor of Science, majoring in biochemistry.

The trio received their awards in Twizel last Tuesday.

Mayor Claire Barlow, who was a member of the selection panel, said the calibre of applications for the awards was "very high".

"On behalf of the MDC, I congratulate all the winners," she said.
