Kidnap accused to remain in custody

The man charged with kidnapping a young girl in Washdyke as she rode her bicycle has been remanded in custody to reappear on February 4.

Blaine Ross Hughes, 20, a timber processing operator of no fixed abode, appeared in the Timaru District Court yesterday on seven charges - kidnapping, theft, burglary, unlawfully carrying a firearm, possession of a weapon (machete), unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and injuring with intent to injure.

He has yet to plea.

Hughes was arrested after a man allegedly grabbed the girl off her bicycle and dragged her across a fence into a bush. A witness went to the girl's aid and the alleged offender ran off.

The incident happened on State Highway 8, near Sir Basil Arthur Park, at 8pm on December 3.
