A family cat may have accidentally found itself on a journey from home in Timaru to Dunedin.

The last time the family saw their beloved Annie the tabby was on Sunday afternoon when they were loading old couches onto a trailer to be sent to a flat in Dunedin, Sarah Jane Garden said.

Annie belongs to Sarah Jane's mother who is devastated by the cat's disappearance.

Sarah Jane said Annie was fond of ripping the lining of the old couches and was often found hiding there.

The couches were driven from Bidwill St to Richmond St and Sarah Jane thought if Annie was in the lining she would have jumped out.

"She would have come home by now."

Annie was a rescue cat from the SPCA.

She had been with the family for five years, although Sarah Jane said the cat had always been a little wild.

Annie is a fawn tabby with a long stripy tail and a lighter W on her forehead.
