A Timaru man will spend Christmas in jail after unsuccessfully trying to rob an ATM machine and a TAB machine.

Jamie Thomas Maguire, 23, was sentenced in the Timaru District Court yesterday to two years, seven months' imprisonment on eight charges: two of burglary, two of theft, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, failing to stop, resisting arrest and breaching release conditions.

His counsel, Jay Lovely, said money motivated his offending as a "spree burglar".

The latest spree began on October 22 after he stole a car from Alpine Energy Stadium.

Later he left a Temuka service station without paying for more than $100 worth of petrol.

At 2.55am on October 23, Maguire used an axe to break into a building in Rakaia but left after finding no money in an ATM machine. An hour later he and an associate removed a TAB machine from a Geraldine premises and used an axe to smash it open, but again found no money.

On October 29, when police went to a Canada St address, he resisted arrest, shoulder-barging a police officer.
