An art show likened to something out of the Big Apple is lighting up Timaru.

Aoraki Polytechnic graphic design students are showcasing their year's work in an outdoor art projection show.

Graphic design and multimedia tutor Wayne Doyle said the show proved to be so popular they have extended the showings and locations.

He said when he was watching the show, he overheard a Scottish tourist say that the display was just like something from New York City.

The 35-minute show includes design work, digital painting, cartoons, music videos and short movies made by the 20 students.

It will be projected on New Year's Eve on old Butterfields building and the Harcourts real estate building, starting at 9pm and running on a loop until the early hours of the morning.
