Uh oh, it's going to be wet
Think twice before considering hosting a barbecue if you're having Christmas in South Canterbury - it could be a wet one.
MetService forecaster Daniel Corbett said today should be largely settled, but revellers could be in "for a bit of a nasty surprise" on the big day tomorrow.
"It's as if Mother Nature hasn't got the memo about what day it is on the calendar," he said.
"If you're planning a barbecue, it might be wise to bring a raincoat."
Mr Corbett said a low pressure system moving up the east coast should make its way through South Canterbury tomorrow morning and would likely lead to scattered showers later in the day.
"If you want to go for a stroll on the beach, it's best to do it early in the day ... the temperatures could drop from the early 20s to low teens by the afternoon."
Mr Corbett said people camping at the lakes in the Waitaki and Mackenzie districts would also experience some rough weather.
"This particular system is likely to hang around annoyingly over the next few days - we'll likely get some patchy rain on Boxing Day, and temperatures in the mid-teens over the next few days afterwards," he said.
"However, it looks like the weekend and New Year's could be more settled as a warm front emerges. Fingers crossed."
