Excitement is growing among Waimate volunteers who have worked together to put on the town's first full community Christmas Dinner.

Not only did the volunteers spend yesterday preparing food for a midday lunch, but they produced gift packs with item such as baking for guests to take home.

The idea was initiated by St Augustine's, and other Waimate churches and individuals from the community have joined to bring the dinner to fruition.

Vicar of St Augustine's, Indrea Alexander, said much of the hard work had been done.

"They've decorated the hall. There's a huge tree and all the tables are ready."

While Lister Home offers a dinner for retired people, the combined community dinner, to be held at St Patrick's hall, is open to all members of the public.
