A crowd of about 4000 people enjoyed a day of racing on Saturday at the Phar Lap raceway in Timaru yesterday.

South Canterbury Racing Club secretary Paul Hinsley said the crowd was on a par with previous years and the weather brightened as the day wore on.

''We were a bit worried in the morning, but the weather picked up for a great family day out,'' he said.

Along with a nine-race card, highlighted by the running of the Timaru Cup, the younger set took to the catwalk for the childrens' best summer look competition and ladies paraded for honours in the best dressed contest.
