A freak boating accident has left a Timaru man in hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

The 73-year-old man was flown to Christchurch Hospital on Saturday after he became tangled in a rope while putting a boat in Lake Benmore near Twizel.

Twizel police Constable Joe Rush said the man was ''basically tangled up in a rope''.

''He was on the boat ramp. He'd just put his boat in the water. He was holding onto the rope and was leading his boat in the water, over to the shore ... as I understand it, the rope tangled around the trailer and basically tangled him up and threw him.''

Mr Rush said no one was being blamed for the incident.

''It was a pure accident - no one was at fault.''

However, he said it was a warning to other boaties to take care on and around the water.

''When people are unloading boats or wanting to put boats back on trailers, just be patient with people,'' he said.
