Coles named in honours list
Former Waimate Mayor John Coles' service to local government has been recognised and he has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year honours.
Mr Coles served as mayor of the Waimate District Council from 2004 until he stepped down this year. Prior to his election to the mayoralty, Mr Coles had served as a Waimate District Councillor from 1992.
He campaigned on behalf of the Waitaki Bridges Lobby Group for the urgent replacement of the 130-year-old twin bridges across the Waitaki River between Kurow and Hakataramea.
Construction of two new bridges, with greater heavy load capacity and pedestrian and cyclist pathways, began in March 2013.
He was a member of the Mayors' Taskforce for Jobs, a nationwide network of mayors working on the issues of employment and livelihood in their communities.
Mr Coles has also been a member of the Canterbury Water Management Strategy Mayoral Forum and the Canterbury Civil Defence Management Group.
He could not be reached for comment yesterday.
