Hurt boatie in serious condition
A Timaru man injured in a boating incident at Lake Benmore is in a serious, but stable condition in Christchurch Hospital.
John Gascoigne, 73, is understood to have sustained spinal injuries after he became tangled in a rope while putting a boat in the lake near Twizel.
A hospital spokesperson said he was in intensive care and classed as "seriously ill".
Twizel police Constable Joe Rush said he had become "basically tangled up in a rope".
"He was on the boat ramp. He'd just put his boat in the water. He was holding on to the rope and was leading his boat in the water, over to the shore ... as I understand it, the rope tangled around the trailer and basically tangled him up and threw him."
It is understood Omarama police are investigating the matter.
