NEW BEGINNINGS: Olivia Adams, 22, holds baby Logan, who is Timaru Hospital’s first baby of 2014. Proud father Nick Jenkins looks on.

Olivia Adams and Nick Jenkins are beginning the new year with a new life.

The couple welcomed their first child, Logan, in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Logan is the first baby born at Timaru Hospital in 2014, and made his way into the world by forceps delivery at 1.44am, weighing 3.4 kilograms.

He was due on December 24, but his parents were pleased to have bought some time between Christmas and his birthday.

"He shouldn't have to have combined Christmas and birthday presents now," Mr Jenkins said.

With his birthday on New Year's Day, Logan will have a lot to celebrate, they agreed.

Ms Adams went into labour around 5pm on New Year's Eve.

Logan was given his name in memory of a family friend who died in his twenties.

"He came into my mind when we were thinking of names," Mr Jenkins said.

The couple moved to Timaru in February last year to be closer to Mr Jenkins' parents. Mr Jenkins is originally from Balclutha, but had been living in Australia for eight years. Ms Adams is from Tasmania.

Mr Jenkins is a nightshift supervisor. "Olivia and I will both be up working at the same time."
