High country holidaymakers are being warned to watch the weather over the next few days.
The MetService has issued numerous severe weather warnings for heavy rain and wind for most of the South Island, especially in the Mackenzie Country.
People holidaying near rivers or lakes should be aware of streams and rivers rising rapidly, surface flooding and slips, significant amounts of heavy rainfall to the west of the South Island and on the Southern Alps, with significant spillover into the headwaters of the Otago and Canterbury lakes and rivers.
Strong to severe gales are predicted to move up the South Island over the next two days, and holidaymakers travelling to the West Coast should prepare for heavy rain over the weekend.
Fortunately there are hints of some drier and more settled weather next week.
