Nothing brings out the flavour of a classic mince and cheese pie like deep frying them, according to Chris Kennedy.

Setting up his food truck, Kai Time, at Ruataniwha Holiday Park, Mr Kennedy is selling deep fried mince pies, which have campers coming back for more.

He got the idea after watching a man on TV who was tired of putting pies in the pie warmer and not selling them, so deep fried the pies instead.

Mr Kennedy first started selling the pies in Dunedin, but said they didn't catch on until he came to the campground.

"They're very nice, the pastry goes all crisp; totally brings out the flavour."

He deep fries in ordinary dripping and said there was no more oil or fat than in a pottle of chips.

At this stage Mr Kennedy said he doesn't have plans to deep fry any other food, but had heard of people deep frying pizza.
