Trampers held up by rising rivers
A group of overdue trampers caught out by rising rivers have been found safe and well in the Mackenzie District's Brodrick Pass area.
The party of three - two women and a man all aged in their 30s - went into the area on December 31. They were due to come out on January 2.
When one of the women failed to contact her husband in Germany, he became concerned and raised the alarm, Twizel police Constable Joe Rush said.
A team from Mackenzie Land Search and Rescue searched for the group on Saturday, with the help of a helicopter.
They found the group walking out of the area safe and well later that day, Mr Rush said.
The trampers were well prepared, he said. "They actually left their intentions in the hut area so it was easy for us to locate them."
The trampers had also made a "good" decision to wait for the river levels to drop.
