Big, heavy gates vanish
Burglars had their work cut out for them when they stole a set of large wrought iron gates from an Orari property over the festive season.
The Victorian gates and a decorative piece of iron were stolen from a shed at a Muff Rd property some time between December 20 and January 5.
Owners Alex and Laurie Copland had stored the gates and decorative iron feature at their neighbour's property while waiting for a tradesman to install them in their garden.
"They were right down the back, out of the way," Mrs Copland said.
"You couldn't see them from the road. I used to check them every weekend to make sure they were still there. We thought, because of the weight of them, and [because there were] two of them, getting them out of there would be a real effort. We thought they would be quite safe."
The culprits left no trace of tyre marks or footprints.
The gates stood about 2.7 metres tall and were similar to those at the Temuka Domain entrance.
"They are very big, very heavy."
The couple were waiting for earthquake repairs to be done to their home before installing them. They bought them in Christchurch and had planned to make them a garden feature.
