Fonterra chimney work on schedule
Stage one of the new chimney at Fonterra's Studholme site is now in place.
The original 50-metre boiler exhaust chimney was eventually removed yesterday morning after work was delayed on Tuesday by heavy rain.
Site manager Alan Maitland said the old chimney, which serves the two boilers at the site, was removed without any problems.
"The men couldn't weld in the rain and the decision was made to leave the stack in place until Wednesday morning when it came away cleanly from the base."
Placement of the bottom section of the new chimney, which was built by Timaru company Parr and Co, went without a hitch, according to Mr Maitland.
"We may have a slight delay with placing the top section due to the blustery winds which are blowing between 30 and 40 knots, but we are still on track to fire up the boilers with the new chimney on Sunday.
