WORKFORCE BACK: Silver Fern Farms' Pareora site is in full swing after the Christmas break.

South Canterbury's two meat processing plants, Alliance Smithfield and Silver Fern Farms Pareora, are both back at work after the Christmas break.

Smithfield plant manager Rob Lindsay said the two sheep and lamb chains and the single venison chain were at full strength leading up to the Christmas break and numbers are starting to build again since the plant restarted on January 3.

"The build-up to Christmas was really busy, with some Saturday work available for the venison processing chain," Mr Lindsay said. "Since the January 3 restart, stock numbers for both sheep and lambs and venison have been a little slow but we expect to have a good season running through to mid-July."

Smithfield's season runs from November to mid-July and the plant employs around 550 people.

Silver Fern Farm's Pareora plant is also back in business after the Christmas break.

Plant manager Graeme Conway said the plant was "very busy" with three chains, two sheep and lamb and one beef, fully operational. "Our season runs through to September and we expect to have good stock numbers for the 750 staff on site."
