A cat delivered to a Timaru vet after being hit by a car earlier this month has had to be put down.

The cat had its tail amputated due to injuries.

Vet nurse Sara Powell said the cat had appeared to be on the mend; however, the cat had become paralysed and uncomfortable due to swelling or blood clots around the spine.
