TALL TALES: Gary the Giraffe at the Waimate Library meets some of his fans, June Pfister, left, Evelyn Richardson and Stella Bilcliffe.

A large giraffe has arrived at the Waimate Library but amateur big game hunters should not be concerned!

Gary the Giraffe was gifted to the library and has become a centrepiece of the Zoo Quest summer holiday programme.

Assistant librarian and children's and young person's librarian Linda Halkett said children come into the library to borrow the books, take them home to read and then come back into the library to relate the story.

"The programme features zoos from around New Zealand which the children can ‘visit' when they call into the library and they can also collect zoo animals to build their own zoos at home," she said.

"We have also established a zoo in one of the rooms at the library where children can bring zoo animals they have created and place them among the trees and fences."

Mrs Halkett said the programme has attracted around 40 children.

"It has been very successful and I am just delighted," she said. "Even children who don't read a lot have come into the library to be part of the programme."
