SINKING FEELING: Toni Dorgan and her bull mastiff notice a large hole which has appeared on the Waimataitai Beach walkway.

A large hole has suddenly appeared at the edge of the Waimataitai Beach walkway.

It has been caused by a leaky underground water pipe that has eroded the clay, eventually causing the surface to slump.

Timaru District Council parks and recreation manager Bill Steans said the pipe would be repaired and the ground reinstated as soon as possible.

"Until then we have put safety fencing around the affected area, and there's room for people to walk past," Mr Steans said.

The council was unaware of the hole, which is over a metre in diameter and burrows underground towards the train tracks, until The Timaru Herald contacted them yesterday morning.

Mr Steans said it was important for the public to notify the council's drainage and water services if they noticed damage like this.

It has not affected the railway track, but the vibrations from passing trains are a suspected cause of the damage to the pipe, he said.
