A fire on the stopbank on the beach at the end of White Rd in Milford, near Temuka, was attended yesterday by the Temuka Volunteer Fire Brigade and a Timaru water tanker.
The fire was as a result of a bonfire from the previous night that was not extinguished properly and was reignited by the wind.
Temuka Fire chief Richard Webb said the fire spread about 100 metres from the bonfire site and took more than an hour to put out. There was burnt scrub and damage to the sand dunes, Mr Webb said.
