Pleasant Point's historic Model T Ford railcar is out of action after a collision yesterday afternoon.

A Toyota Rav4 hit the front of the railcar at the Russell St crossing while it was on the tracks just after midday. No-one was injured.

Pleasant Point Railway and Historical Society president Bryan Blanchard said the railcar had a suspected twisted chassis.

This was the first crash since operation of the railcar began in the 1970s, although there had been some near misses. The crossing lights were on when the crash occurred and the railcar driver said he was doing 17 miles an hour, Mr Blanchard said.

The lights, which were recently fixed after being knocked over 18 months ago, were again knocked over in yesterday's collision.

Police were investigating the crash.

Mr Blanchard said the insurance company of the Toyota driver would pay for the repairs, but the costs were not yet known.
