Timaru has had its coldest January on record.
The town's mean minimum temperature was just 7.8 degrees Celsius for the month, making it the coldest January for Timaru since records began in 1885.
That temperature was 2.5C cooler than normal, according to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research's (Niwa) monthly climate summary.
The summary also named Lake Tekapo as one of the country's sunniest places, with 296 sunshine hours for the month.
However, it was beaten to the top spot by Whakatane, which had 314 hours.
The next-sunniest place was Tauranga, with 301 hours, with Gisborne sharing 296. Despite getting more sunshine than most places, Lake Tekapo was also one of the country's coldest towns.
It had an "extreme minimum" temperature for the month of just minus 1.1C, recorded on January 18. It was the fourth-lowest January temperature for the town since its records began in 1925.
Niwa also found that from last Saturday, soil was drier than normal in parts of South Canterbury.
