Hot, Hot Hot. That's what four Aoraki/Mt Cook Department of Conservation staff can expect for the next three weeks as they work on dampening down fires in an Australian national park.

The four, Wayne Lavery, Cullum Boleyn and Marcus Reid of Mt Cook, and Shaun Aitcheson of Twizel, are all members of DOC's rural fire team.

They applied for the Australian assignment which will see them working in a national park in Gippsland in the State of Victoria, according to DOC ranger Ray Bellringer.

Mr Bellringer said DOC had built up a relationship with the Department of Sustainability and Environment, and Parks Victoria, the two organisations which have roles similar to DOC.

Victoria had a reasonably small firefighting capability and needed to call in outside assistance when fighting large bushfires.
