$300 fines for unregistered dogs
More than 400 dogs are still roaming the Timaru District unregistered.
In December the Timaru District Council had an amnesty allowing the estimated 660 owners of unregistered dogs to come forward and settle their accounts.
Council regulatory services manager Chris English said that since then 145 dog owners had registered their dogs and another 57 declared their dog dead or that it had left the district.
The amnesty has ended and now the council's animal control team will be visiting homes where the 400-plus unregistered dogs are thought to be and issuing $300 infringement notices to the owners, Mr English said.
"We had a great response thanks to the publicity with over 200 people coming forward. Now there will be random door knocks.
"A handful of notices have already been issued."
