Noah enjoys sound's power
Timaru youngster Noah Valentine can finally hear.
The 1-year-old had his cochlear implants turned on this week and has reacted well to the transition, his mum Sara said.
"Noah has done well, reacting to musical instruments, which will be a little quieter than we would hear," she said.
"His reactions were quite subtle but he wasn't frightened. He is starting to respond to some voice like meow, moo etc. He is watching people's mouths intently.
"This is a gradual process and we look forward to our next appointment in a fortnight when he should be hearing more of our voices."
Cochlear implants are designed to help severe to profoundly deaf people who gain little or no benefit from hearing aids.
Noah's operation was made possible after the community raised $62,500, which was $12,500 more than the family needed. The extra money will go back to the groups that donated it so someone else can benefit.
