Basilica gets rooftop inspection
Wind damaged battens replacedAL WILLIAMS
Sacred Heart Basilica is getting a once-over from on high, with plumbers replacing copper battens that were damaged during September gales.
Father Brian Fennessy said a couple of battens were broken during the storms. With the crane in place contractors would also inspect the basilica's spouting.
Meanwhile, the church is waiting on Opus for an engineer's report after the earthquakes of three years ago. Father Fennessy said the report would focus on the condition of the building in terms of measuring how earthquake-prone it was.
''There is no earthquake damage. It's about the earthquake-prone aspect,'' he said.
