Waimate High School's new deputy principal, Kellie Tagiaia, has returned to the south after seven years at Opotoki College in the Bay of Plenty.

Ms Tagiaia grew up in Dunsandel and went to Ellesmere College and the University of Canterbury. She had links to South Canterbury through the Chamberlain and Ponsonby families, and said she was enjoying getting to know the Waimate students and the school community.

She specialised in physical education at training college, and will be in charge of netball at the school. She also teaches year seven and nine social science, and skills for life. Her husband Eafou is flanker and No 8 for the Waimate senior rugby team, and an at- home dad for their preschooler.
