Police are calling for witnesses of a car crash near Tekapo on Sunday, which killed an 86-year-old woman.
The accident happened on State Highway 8 at about 2.45pm. Twizel Constable Joe Rush said the crash occurred after the driver, travelling north, attempted to overtake a tour bus.
A truck-and-trailer unit, travelling south, attempted to brake but jack-knifed.
The woman's car, a silver Honda, hit the trailer and drove off the road.
Temuka man Shane Wolczuk witnessed the crash.
"I was travelling back home with some friends, we could see it in front of us. It was pretty horrific," he said.
Mr Wolczuk said an off-duty doctor arrived on the scene and attempted to help but "by then it was too late".
"The woman's car almost ended up underneath the trailer. It was pretty much crushed."
Mr Wolczuk had not spoken to police but said he would happily do so if they contacted him.
Mr Rush said the Twizel-Tekapo fire brigade and St John also attended the scene, while the death has been referred to the coroner.
The serious crash unit was also investigating. Mr Rush said police hoped to release the name of the deceased woman today once next-of-kin were informed.
"In the meantime, we want anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward with information," Mr Rush said.
