Ever dreamed of running away to join the circus?
The Zirka Circus crew have done exactly that. Aged from 13 to 22, the all-Chinese crew have been in the circus business for years.
"In China, the circus is seen as a good profession and most children in the crew have been training since they were 5 or 6," said Zirka Circus manager Jane Hurring. "The youngest member we ever had was 10."
The crew are a mixed bag of performance artists.
The theme of the circus this year is "send in the clowns" but, if they are not your favourite, death-defying acrobats, jugglers and a "Wheel of Death" are all on show.
"We have some new exciting acts and, if the show is as popular as the ones we had in Oamaru and Dunedin, then the tickets will sell out quickly," said Mrs Hurring.
The circus's Timaru shows run from tonight through until Sunday.
