A Timaru woman was admitted to hospital after being stabbed early yesterday morning.

Police arrested her 45-year-old female flatmate, who was taken into custody and bailed to appear in court tomorrow.

The 35-year-old stab victim was wounded in the torso and admitted to Timaru Hospital for treatment. Her injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Police would not reveal what led to the incident but confirmed it took place at 4.46am at Ranui Ave.

Earlier, at 3.45am, two men and a woman in their 20s walking home allege two of their group were assaulted by members of another group.

The two groups had exchanged words on the corner of Albert and Hewlings streets before the incident.

The woman in the first group was allegedly assaulted by some members of the second group.

A man also from the first group was allegedly hit and lost consciousness when struck by men from the second group.

No arrests had been made at time of going to print.
