There were huge, ugly and well dressed pumpkins at the Mitre 10 Easy As for Kids Big Pumpkin competition on Saturday.

The heaviest pumpkin weighed in at 102.3kg and was grown by Jessica Goodman, with some advice from her dad.

Jessica planted the seeds in spring when they were given to her by the hardware store and germinated them in the hot water cupboard.

The store's website offered plenty of tips to would-be pumpkin growers, but the secret to Jessica's success was not just watering but using pig manure and fish mulch as well.

Luke Smith won the ugliest pumpkin award.

Oliver Workman took out the title of the best dressed pumpkin.

This is the second year the national contest has been held.

It was organised as a way to encourage children into the garden.

The heaviest pumpkin from each store goes into the battle to win an iPad mini and a garden goodie pack plus the title of Mitre 10's Biggest Pumpkin Grower.
