The Fire Service attended three minor fires in Timaru yesterday.

At 12.16am an attempt was made to set a tree in Hassall St alight. At 1.30am a sign in Sefton St was set fire. In Canada St a house fire could not be traced although there was smoke in the area.

Senior station officer Martin Bennett said the "nuisance fires" were committed by thoughtless people.

"The fires had the potential to spread and cause damage to property and possibly endanger lives."
