Stray dog bites walker

A bull mastiff is to be euthanised after it attacked a woman in Pareora on Monday.

The 48-year-old woman was walking her dog on Clifford St when she was approached by the bull mastiff and a staffordshire bull terrier.

She was attacked by the bull mastiff, which left a bite mark on her leg.

Timaru District Council regulatory services group manager Chris English said the owners have been notified of the incident.

"The owners of the dogs have been very cooperative and are very sorry for the actions of the dogs. The owners have signed [the bull mastiff] over to us for destruction. The other dog will probably be labelled a 'menacing dog'."

As a menacing dog it will have to be on a leash and muzzled when away from its property.

English said charges might not be laid if authorities were satisfied the destruction of the dog and other actions were appropriate.
