A furniture truck swerved across a road after hitting a street light pole and flipped, south of Timaru, this evening.

The truck heading north on the Timaru-Pareora Highway was seen by witnesses to fishtail across the oncoming southern lane and flip landing on its side on the grass verge.

The accident occurred at 5.15pm about 200 metres north of the Talbot Rd turn off. The truck driver and his passenger escaped injury but reported a suspected mechanical failure causing the vehicle to veer into the pole. It appeared one side of the truck locked up before the collision making it bank to the left.

A crane lifted the crashed vehicle onto the back of a truck for further inspection. Witnesses who have not already been spoken to by police are asked to contact Constable Ben Grant at Timaru Police station.
