ON SHOW: Olivia Hayward leads her lamb in the grand parade at the Mackenzie Highland Show held in Fairlie.

Cars, rugby, music and trains are all on show in South Canterbury this Easter weekend.

Car lovers can jump-start their day with the VW National Show in Timaru. This is the first time the event has been held in Timaru and will run from tomorrow until Monday.

It is the 24th year of the "nationals" and 143 vehicles have registered for the event so far and 272 adults and 61 children will be at the show, said organiser Dylan Murray.

The Show'n'Shine is the main event, held inside the Port Loop at Caroline Bay. Free admission, but a gold coin donation is requested for Ronald McDonald House.

The VWs will be judged in several classes.

The Southern Alps Music Awards will feature 57 artists with the finals at the Bay Hall on Sunday night.

The Pleasant Point Rugby Football Club celebrates its 125th anniversary this weekend on and off the field - with the State Highway 8 Cup up for grabs for the first time.

And for something completely different, the South Canterbury Traction Engine Club celebrates its 50th anniversary at the Winchester showgrounds on Saturday and Sunday. It will feature traction engines, vintage cars and tractors and classic trucks. There will be a grand parade of vehicles and machinery each day, and demonstrations of chaff cutting, threshing and baling.

It's Easter Art Extravaganza time in Geraldine, with the annual "cash-and-carry" exhibition at the Geraldine Primary School Hall throughout the weekend. And, as always, the Easter weekend in South Canterbury concludes with town heading to the country for the Mackenzie A&P Show at Fairlie on Monday.

Between 12,000 to 15,000 visitors are expected to see over 400 trade sites, hundreds of classes ranging from horses and show jumping to livestock, home brew and cooking.
