A 44-year-old Twizel woman was one of two people killed on Canterbury roads in a 24-hour period at the start of the Easter break.

She was named as Yulane Margaret Cadigan.

The crash happened at 5.15pm on Thursday on Dog Kennel corner, State Highway 8, near Tekapo. The vehicle failed to take the corner and hit a tree. The driver died at the scene. Two passengers were taken to Timaru Hospital with moderate injuries.

Initial police inquiries indicated that speed and the poor condition of the vehicle may have been contributing factors, along with poor weather.

The second fatality was an elderly man struck by a north-bound vehicle while walking south at Ealing Flat on the Hinds-Rangitata Highway at 3.14am yesterday.

It is understood the victim's car, a white Nissan Pulsar, was parked jutting out on to the road about 2kms north from where he died. Timaru police would like to hear from any witnesses or anyone with information on the car and its movements.

A 21-year-old woman heading south lost control on the Temuka River bridge at 1.10am yesterday, hitting the railing. Her injuries were unknown.
