Coastal walkway opened
Breath of fresh air and leisurely walkALEXIA JOHNSTON
A new walkway is open for business in Timaru.
Located near the Smithfield rock pools and beach, it has been a work in progress over the past six months.
Now it is attracting people to the area who want a breath of fresh air and leisurely walk with a view.
Timaru District Council parks and reserves manager Bill Steans said the concept was on the drawing board about 20 years ago, but it did not go ahead because the council could not get access to land.
However, Smithfield meatworks has since agreed to lease some of its land to the project.
"We were very pleased to be able to work with the management of Smithfield and get it in fairly quickly," Steans said.
The final stage of the project was completed last week, with the addition of recycled plastic seating. "It just gives people the opportunity to sit there and look out to sea, which is quite relaxing."
