Wintry weather in the Mackenzie District has prompted council staff to take on a new media form with their very own Facebook page.

The page, which delivers updates on council issues and community news, has been live since June 19 and has already had more than 40 posts and 330 likes.

A Mackenzie District Council spokesperson said it was an extremely useful tool for relaying roading closures and information to the community during the recent snow event.

Several updates were made about roads, power outages and the amount of snow fallen in the area. Messages from businesses such as Telecom and Tekapo Helicopters were also passed on to the public using the Facebook page.

During weather and civil defence events like the snow the page is opened to receive posts of information from the public, the spokesperson said

The page can be found at facebook.com/mackenziedistrict. Residents must like the page to receive updates. The council checks the page regularly during business hours.
