A pedestrian has died after a hit and run in Auckland early this morning.

Police said the man was hit by a car on Great North Road, Waterview, near Oakley Ave, at about 1.20am.

He subsequently died of the injuries.

Police are looking for a silver coloured Subaru stationwagon with frontal panel damage, and are appealing to anyone who may have seen the crash to contact them.

Police initially closed Great North Road but this morning a smaller area, which includes a bar and two liquor stores, had been cordoned off while the road was running normally.
