A man has been arrested in relation to the unprovoked stabbing of a Dunedin woman in her home.

Police say a man, who was unknown to the woman, broke into her Duncan St home about 9am yesterday and punched her and stabbed her in the neck after she answered a knock to her front door.

She managed to fend off the attacker and fled the address with her 3-year-old daughter.

The woman suffered serious facial injuries in the attack and was now being cared for in Dunedin Hospital, Senior Sergeant Kelvin Lloyd said.

Her daughter was unharmed, Lloyd said.

Police arrested a 21-year-old Dunedin man in relation to the attack. He faces a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

Further serious charges were also likely, said police.

They were not seeking anyone else in relation to the attack but were still carrying out the scene examination of the woman's home with about 20 officers working on the inquiry.

Police were also yet to speak to the victim. She remained in a stable condition in Dunedin Hospital following surgery yesterday.

After the attack, both mother and daughter managed to leave the address and a person driving by picked them up and took them to Dunedin Hospital, Lloyd said.

Police thanked members of the public for their help in the case and have asked people living in the Duncan St area to search their properties and if they found any items that did not belong to them to report it to police.

Anyone with information could contact Dunedin Police on 471 4800 or provide information anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
