A man was stabbed with a samurai sword after gatecrashers descended on a party in West Auckland.

The 18-year-old was taken to hospital with a punctured lung after a fight at a house on Glenfinn Pl in the suburb of Massey on Saturday night.

Detective Senior Sergeant James Bothamley said the brawl started when several carloads of people arrived at the house to crash the party.

The occupants emerged from the house with weapons, including pieces of wood and decorative samurai swords.

"During the fight the man was stabbed with the sword just below the neck, where it has punctured his right lung," Bothamley said.

Police arrived and dispersed the partygoers but by that time the offender had left the scene.

Inquiries were continuing but the groups involved were not forthcoming with information.

The stabbing victim was still recovering hospital.
