Central Otago police have arrested an Alexandra teen for allegedly disfiguring others.

It was believed the 17-year-old preyed on unsuspecting young people, burning them with a heated cigarette lighter after they had fallen asleep at parties.

Detective Sergeant Derek Shaw, of Alexandra, said police were treating the incident seriously as the teen had targeted the victims' faces and head area in at least two incidents.

The offending had occurred during the past three months and the burns, in the shape of a crescent and referred to as a "smiley", had not started to clear up yet, Shaw said.

The male teen was expected to appear in the Alexandra District Court today on two charges of injuring with the intent to disfigure.

Police urged people to come forward if they have been a target of similar attacks.
