A six vehicle crash has blocked Auckland's Southern Motorway which was already congested with holiday traffic.

The accident, near the Takinini off-ramp heading south, happened shortly after 12.30pm.

It is not known if anyone was seriously hurt.

A few minutes earlier two cars crashed at the base of the Auckland Harbour Bridge blocking a single lane.

A police spokesman said that accident has been cleared.

Traffic had already reportedly been slow both north and south of Auckland as motorists returned home following Christmas and left for their summer holidays.
