A mysterious death at a house in Manawatu is under investigation.

Levin Detective Senior Sergeant Marc Hercock said a 48-year-old man was found dead at a Bainesse Rd property, Rongotea, where he was staying at 8.30am on Saturday.

He was found by the home's owner, who called police and an ambulance.

The cause of death remained unexplained.

Hercock said they hoped to have an autopsy completed by tomorrow night.

A scene examination has been completed and police are in the process of making further lines of inquiry to piece together his last movements
