A woman is in critical condition in Middlemore Hospital after an explosion at a house in Ruakaka, south of Whangarei, last night.

The woman was flown to hospital with burns to 70 per cent of her body after the dramatic explosion which enveloped the Tamure Place house in flame about 8.10pm.

Fire Service communications shift manager Dallas Ramsay said the explosion rocked a number of nearby houses.

"Reports from a number of members of the public said there was a large explosion."

A Fire Service investigator was at the house today trying to determine what caused the blast.

A resident of the street said the explosion just about shook her house off the ground.

"The whole house shook. I thought a car had run into it," she said.
