Pinal County deputies arrested three Mexican drug smugglers who tried to flee after a chase, including one who had been deported five times in the past two years.

Deputies discovered 270 pounds of marijuana that authorities said had a street value of more than US$200,000 (NZ$240,000). 

The events began Monday after a resident called in a report of a red Buick that looked to be a smuggling vehicle.

Deputies spotted the car a short time later and stopped it near Interstate 8 and Interstate 10 south of Casa Grande.

As deputies approached the car, it moved forward about 200m and three men fled into the desert. 

With help of other deputies, the three men were captured nearby.

All three were from Mexico.
