Former Celtic and South Canterbury player Jimmy Owen has been included in the Canterbury wider training group for their ITM Cup campaign for the first time.
Head coach Scott Robertson announced 28 players, including three players on provincial union contracts and 16 members of the Canterbury Rugby Academy.
Owen, along with Sake Aca and Mark Maitland, are new faces to the Canterbury Rugby environment.
Robertson said the three had proven themselves at a club rugby level.
Four of the players named are involved in the Junior World Cup. Kaveinga Finau, Richie Mo'unga and Tom Sanders are with the New Zealand team and Nathanial Apa is with Samoa.
